How to clean and sharpen a sword?

well i was at a fleet market and i bought a really good sword but the blade is kind of a bit dirty and i really wanna clean it and make it look really good and sharpen it because it is kind of dull but the problems is i do not want to damage it or brake so please tell me how to clean it and sharpen it without damaging it or braking it.
