Why is this guy calling me kiddo?

Complicated! So, this friend of mine who is about 10 years older than me recently became my boss. Since then, I have been trying to figure out what his deal is... he either REALLY likes me or he's gay... and I can't figure out which!! I know, it sounds ridiculous, but I've talked to others who know us about it, and they agree the whole thing is a mystery. We get along great and have a ton of things in common, and with all the time we spend together at work, I apparently have developed a monstrous crush on him. He's a very private person, so he really doesn't discuss his personal life with anyone... the question looms and we can't figure him out. Lately, I've been trying to be friendlier to give him a subtle idea of my interest... and he seems to be responding, but today he called me "kiddo." I can't figure if that means he knows and is wary of the boss/age factor and is trying to point that out/remind me of it... or if it is a term of endearment???
